Becks’ assertion that “Life is incredibly complex” is something that I strongly identify and agree with for the simple reason of my life is incredibly complex. I along with two of my adult siblings will be taking temporary custody of our youngest sister and my mom won’t be able to live in the same house as her for a minimum of three months. This is my current situation in its most basic form so I reiterate I definitely agree with her assertion. Now a complicated life is by no means a unique life in fact I would say the opposite. When you dig deep enough into someone’s life you will always find complexity even if they are not all equal in this regard. This loops back to the narrative in the sense that this digging into the past and connection their past life events and perceptions together is the formation of a narrative.
Conversely to what I wrote previously while I recognize the complexity of life I often find that the main drag of trying to develop a narrative for my life. This is in line with Beck’s description of forming a narrative “ It’s hardly a simple undertaking.” I agree and feel as if connecting my entire life into a story that truly encompasses all of its nuances is a very daunting and time-consuming task.
Lastly, Beck’s idea that narrative is this tool that helps you reflect upon life and understand your own story. I disagree with this, I feel as if metaphor helps us understand things but the narrative itself is not used in the same way as a tool. Narrative is not the tool with which we understand our story it is the act itself of understanding our own life story.
I agree with how you disagreed with the idea that “metaphors help us understand things but the narrative itself is not used in the same way as a tool”. I disagree as well because of the way we express something is from us and its not a tool its the way we see it and hope others understand it from our perspective. I also do agree with your statement of connecting your life into a story is challenging because you don’t always remember it all, you remember the important events or certain events.
